Maize Goddess
Unlike in Europe, maize has always been an important food in Latin America. Accordingly, all maize deities were worshipped.
This maize goddess, which is the object of the month of May in the PANEUM, is one of those nameless predecessors of the well-known deity Chicomecoatl. Statues of her were found mainly in Teotihuacán - a prehistoric city. What is striking about her is the paper hair ornament or "Amacalli" on her head.
